Statistical Breakdown
Josh Giddey is a very young point guard with excellent size and a weird skillset. He has a few clear strengths in his game including his passing, rebounding, and rim protection.
Giddy is one of the best passers in the draft and that is reflected by his assist rate. He has one of the best assist rates in the class which makes up for his worrisome turnover rate. His film shows that he has good court vision and is undeniably a very good passer, but I worry that his playmaking might be less effective with a higher offensive load.
I have to be completely honest, his offensive skillset scares me because he doesn't bring much to the table besides high level passing. His scoring rate, scoring efficiency, three point shooting, and free throw rate are all extremely poor and I don't see him being a high level creator unless he becomes a solid scorer or three point shooter.
He is one of the youngest players in the class, so I expect him to develop as a scorer, but his free throw rate leads me to believe that he may never become a reliable scorer in the NBA. Considering he's 6'8 and has a very good handle for his size, I'd expect him to generate more free throw attempts.
Giddey would be an amazing prospect if rebounding was important for a point guard, but unfortunately, it isn't, so his value is limited as a result.
I know some people love Josh Giddey and I've seen him as high as fifth on some big boards. I hate to be so negative about a teenager, but I'm pessimistic about his potential due to his underwhelming offensive skillset.
Scoring efficiency isn't necessary for a young prospect to be worth betting on (just ask LaMelo Ball), but they do need to score at a decent rate or at least have a high offensive load for me to be comfortable with their projection as a primary initiator. Although I'm not super high on him, Josh Giddey's passing is very impressive for his size and age and I think he has enough defensive potential to be worth picking somewhere in the first round.
